ALICE HELWIG WINS “BEST IN SHOW”
SKY - NOVEMBER 2019
"ILLUMINATION"
“ My work examines themes of awe, alienation, prayer and personal epiphanies. By looking at what exists immediately in front of me, I try to grapple with the eternal. Painting helps mark my place in the world. Painting helps me share these truths.”
-- ALICE HELWIG
This painting was awarded Best of Show, Sky in 2019.
This is the write up that accompanied the certificate.
"ILLUMINATION is a golden experience. It tenders hope, warmth and the promise of renewal to all visitors including those who until now were unaware of the need. A magnificent and active sky befriends and protects the serene and humble setting beneath. A tree in a state of prayer and awe on the lower left makes contact and holds on as long as possible in an effort to absorb every available drop of the spiritual grace and nutrition that passes by. The low horizon line emphasizes the power of the sky allowing it ample space to work before nightfall and the field of silent snow in shadow at the bottom presents a cool feeling and announces the attendance of time in the picture. Alternating bands of orange and blue form a contrasting pattern of temperature that accompanies the harmonious embrace of this impressive and restorative painting."
