I’m a Liquitex Demonstration Artist!

Hello fellow artists and art enthusiasts,
I'm thrilled to announce that I am now a Liquitex Demonstration Artist!

This exciting journey takes me back to when I first picked up a bottle of Liquitex paint at the tender age of twelve, sparking a passion that has only grown stronger over the years.

I will be hosting both online and in-person demonstrations where I'll showcase the incredible versatility of Liquitex paints. Whether you're a seasoned painter or new to the art world, these demonstrations will offer something for everyone, including tips and techniques to elevate your work.

My goal is to create an engaging and supportive environment where fellow painters, art collectors, and anyone interested in the creative process can gather, learn, and share their experiences. With Liquitex being a proud B Corporation, we will also touch upon sustainable practices in the art community, like their new Bio-Based Heavy Acrylic paint.

I look forward to connecting with you all in a friendly and informal setting as we explore the vibrant world of acrylics together. Keep an eye out for updates on specific dates and locations for the in-person sessions and how you can join us online. These will be announced on my newsletter, so make sure you become a Cloud- seeker and sign up.

Happy painting,
ASHelwig

If We were Better Boys

Helwig Painting wins third place acrylic at the People Portrait Prize YYC 2022

“If We were Better Boys” wins third place, acrylic category at the People’s Portrait Prize YYC, December 2022.

Every few years Aaron Sidorenko and team organize an art show that highlights portraiture. The spirit of the show is to celebrate yyc artists who paint the figure. This year the event was spread over three venues as they recieve many more entries. The hosts were NvrLnd 1048 21 Ave SE, Contemporary Calgary 701-11th St SW,and cSPACE creative hub in Marda Loop 1721-29th Avenue SW.

This is not something that I feel proficient at. But I decided to try my hand at it. I entered three paintings, and to my surprize this one placed in the acrylic category.

This painting explores old family portraits and features my dad (on the left) and his brother Doug. The reference was a faded black and white photo.

I used a substrate of pink-tinted modelling paste on canvas. The paint was applied with brushes and palette knives.
